Xin Metal Day Master (辛金)
A Xin Metal Day Master (辛金) is someone born on a day whose Heavenly Stem is Xīn, the Yin form of Metal. Its classic image is a gem or bead of fine metal that has already been through the fire: small, luminous and best seen when it is kept clean.
The image of Xin Metal
Where raw ore needs heat to become useful, Xin is pictured as metal that has already been refined. Think of a polished stone in a riverbed, or a pearl that gleams once it is rinsed. As a Yin stem, Xin is inward, subtle and sensitive to its setting. It does not need forging. It needs the right surroundings to show its quality. Its sibling, Geng, is Yang Metal, raw and forceful, shaped by pressure. Xin's concern runs the other way, since too much pressure or burial can dull it. Where Geng proves itself through action, Xin is often recognized for clarity, discernment and the care it brings to finished work.
The classical verse
The Di Tian Sui (滴天髓), a classical BaZi text with commentary by Ren Tieqiao (Qing dynasty), gives each stem a short verse. This is the verse for Xin Metal.
辛金软弱,温润而清。
Xin Metal is soft and gentle; warm, moist and clear.
畏土之叠,乐水之盈。
It fears Earth heaped in layers and delights in Water's fullness.
能扶社稷,能救生灵。
It can uphold the state, and it can rescue living beings.
热则喜母,寒则喜丁。
In heat it welcomes its mother; in cold it welcomes Ding.
Commentators read the opening as a portrait of refined metal: delicate, lustrous and clean. Heavy layers of Earth bury a jewel, while plentiful Water, usually read as Ren Water, rinses it and shows off its shine. The third line is the most debated. In Ren Tieqiao's well-known reading, Xin combines with Bing Fire and the pair transforms toward Water. That union restrains Fire, so it neither overwhelms Ren Water (upholding the state) nor scorches Jia Wood (rescuing living beings). The last line is practical. In a hot chart, Xin likes its mother, moist Earth, while in a cold chart it likes gentle Ding Fire for warmth.
Themes you may recognize
Strengths
- Spotting what makes something genuinely well made
- Keeping a calm, clear head when conversations turn messy
- Quietly steering strong personalities toward a gentler outcome
- Bringing out the best in a finished piece of work
Growth edges
- Letting a little dust stay without needing to polish it
- Saying when the pressure feels too heavy, early and plainly
- Trusting that your value shows even in imperfect settings
At work
Xin often fits roles that reward discernment, refinement and a light touch: the final review, the careful edit, the detail that lifts a whole project. The verse suggests your setting matters a great deal. Heavy, cluttered environments can dull your output, while open, fluid ones help it show. You may also notice a quiet diplomatic gift, the ability to temper stronger forces around you without confronting them head-on.
In relationships
In relationships, Xin tends to be thoughtful, observant and sensitive to tone. Small gestures often carry a lot of weight for you, in both directions. The verse's image of a gem dulled under heaped soil may describe how heavy expectations feel. Partners and friends who offer clear, flowing conversation, rather than layers of unspoken weight, often help you feel most like yourself. Being clear about what you need helps others meet you.
The Day Master is one character out of eight. The rest of the chart, especially the season and the other stems, shapes how these themes show up.
How Xin Metal relates to the other stems
In BaZi, every other stem in your chart plays one of the Ten Gods roles relative to your Day Master. For a Xin Metal Day Master:
| Stem | Element | Role (Ten God) |
|---|---|---|
| 甲 Jia Wood | Wood | Direct Wealth 正财 |
| 乙 Yi Wood | Wood | Indirect Wealth 偏财 |
| 丙 Bing Fire | Fire | Direct Officer 正官 |
| 丁 Ding Fire | Fire | Seven Killings 七杀 |
| 戊 Wu Earth | Earth | Direct Resource 正印 |
| 己 Ji Earth | Earth | Indirect Resource 偏印 |
| 庚 Geng Metal | Metal | Rob Wealth 劫财 |
| 辛 Xin Metal | Metal | Friend 比肩 |
| 壬 Ren Water | Water | Hurting Officer 伤官 |
| 癸 Gui Water | Water | Eating God 食神 |
Xin Metal through the seasons
The month you were born in sets the season, which classical BaZi weighs most when judging how supported the Day Master is. Months begin at the solar terms, not on the 1st.
| Season | Month branches | For Xin Metal |
|---|---|---|
| Spring | Tiger, Rabbit (寅 卯), about Feb 4 – Apr 5 | Wood: busy |
| Summer | Snake, Horse (巳 午), about May 5 – Jul 7 | Fire: under pressure |
| Autumn | Monkey, Rooster (申 酉), about Aug 7 – Oct 8 | Metal: in season |
| Winter | Pig, Rat (亥 子), about Nov 7 – Jan 6 | Water: expressive |
| Transition months | Dragon, Goat, Dog, Ox (辰 未 戌 丑), the last month of each season: about Apr 5 – May 5, Jul 7 – Aug 7, Oct 8 – Nov 7 and Jan 6 – Feb 4 | Earth: supported |
In season means the season of its own element; traditionally the Day Master has the season's support. Supported: the season of the element that feeds it. Expressive: the season of the element it produces. Busy: the season of the element it controls. Under pressure: the season of the element that controls it. Season is one factor; the whole chart decides overall strength.
Xin Metal and Bing Fire: the stem combination
Xin Metal pairs with Bing Fire in one of the five stem combinations (辛丙合). Traditionally the pair is drawn together, and under the right seasonal conditions the combination is said to transform toward Water. In a chart, it can describe a strong pull between the areas of life the two stems represent. Whether it transforms is a technical question that depends on the month and the rest of the chart.

Questions
Why does the Di Tian Sui say Xin fears Earth?
Earth produces Metal in the five-element cycle, so the line can seem surprising. Commentators explain it through the image of a jewel. A little soil supports it, but heaped layers bury it and hide its shine. So in a chart with very heavy Earth, practitioners often look for Water to rinse it or Wood to loosen the soil, rather than adding more support.
How is Xin Metal different from Geng Metal?
Both are Metal, but they are opposite in polarity. Geng is Yang, raw and forceful, and the classic text says Fire sharpens it. Xin is Yin, already refined, and strong Fire is less welcome, except as gentle Ding warmth in a cold chart. Geng is shaped by being worked, while Xin is shown at its best by being kept clean.
How do I know if I am a Xin Metal Day Master?
Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born. Enter your birth date in the Day Master calculator, or your full birth details in the BaZi calculator for the exact chart. If the stem of your Day pillar is 辛 (Xīn), you are a Xin Metal Day Master.
