Geng Metal Day Master (庚金)

A Geng Metal Day Master (庚金) is someone born on a day whose Heavenly Stem is Gēng, the Yang form of Metal. Its classic image is unworked ore and the cool, cutting air of autumn: dense, hard material with a lot of force that has not yet been shaped.

The image of Geng Metal

Traditional sources tie Geng to autumn, when harvests are cut and the air turns crisp. The image is raw metal still in the rock, or the season's sharp, clearing wind. As a Yang stem, Geng is outward and forceful. It acts on its surroundings, and it changes most when something acts on it in return, such as heat in a forge. Its sibling, Xin, is Yin Metal, already refined into something small and finished. Geng is potential strength waiting for shape. Xin is shape that has already been given. One is tested by being worked, the other by being kept clean. Both value integrity, but they arrive at it from opposite ends.

The classical verse

The Di Tian Sui (滴天髓), a classical BaZi text with commentary by Ren Tieqiao (Qing dynasty), gives each stem a short verse. This is the verse for Geng Metal.

庚金带煞,刚健为最。
Geng Metal carries a killing edge; it is the hardest and most vigorous of all.

得水而清,得火而锐。
With Water it becomes clear; with Fire it becomes sharp.

土润则生,土干则脆。
Moist Earth gives it life; dry Earth leaves it brittle.

能赢甲兄,输于乙妹。
It can overcome its elder brother Jia, but loses to its younger sister Yi.

Di Tian Sui, “Ten Stems”. English rendering by ClearBaZi.

Commentators connect the killing edge to autumn's austere energy, the force that strips leaves and brings the harvest in. Water is read as an outlet that lets Geng's sharpness drain into something clean and clever. Fire, especially Ding Fire, is the forge that turns raw ore into a usable tool. The earth line contrasts damp soil, which feeds Metal, with parched soil, which cannot nourish it and leaves it brittle. In the final line, Jia and Yi are Wood. Geng can cut the tall tree, yet the soft vine Yi wins by combining with Geng, which many read as gentleness disarming force.

Themes you may recognize

Strengths

  • Meeting hard problems directly instead of waiting for them to fade
  • Clearing away what is no longer useful, cleanly and quickly
  • Growing sharper and more skilled under real pressure and demands
  • A blunt honesty that people come to trust over time

Growth edges

  • Noticing when a softer approach would reach the goal faster
  • Allowing quieter people the time they need to speak
  • Treating rest as part of the forging, not a delay

At work

Geng often shines in roles that reward decisiveness, clear standards and the willingness to handle the hard part first. You may notice that a demanding environment brings out your best, much as Fire hones metal in the verse. Without some outlet for all that energy, frustration can build. Roles that pair real challenge with a channel for strategy or communication, the Water side of the verse, tend to feel balanced.

In relationships

In friendship and partnership, Geng tends to be loyal, protective and plainspoken. People usually know where they stand with you. The verse's last line offers a gentle image: the toughest metal is won over by the softest plant. You may find that patient, kind people reach you more easily than forceful ones. Letting someone see the warmer interior beneath the hard surface often deepens trust and invites the same openness back.

The Day Master is one character out of eight. The rest of the chart, especially the season and the other stems, shapes how these themes show up.

How Geng Metal relates to the other stems

In BaZi, every other stem in your chart plays one of the Ten Gods roles relative to your Day Master. For a Geng Metal Day Master:

Geng Metal through the seasons

The month you were born in sets the season, which classical BaZi weighs most when judging how supported the Day Master is. Months begin at the solar terms, not on the 1st.

SeasonMonth branchesFor Geng Metal
SpringTiger, Rabbit (寅 卯), about Feb 4 – Apr 5Wood: busy
SummerSnake, Horse (巳 午), about May 5 – Jul 7Fire: under pressure
AutumnMonkey, Rooster (申 酉), about Aug 7 – Oct 8Metal: in season
WinterPig, Rat (亥 子), about Nov 7 – Jan 6Water: expressive
Transition monthsDragon, Goat, Dog, Ox (辰 未 戌 丑), the last month of each season: about Apr 5 – May 5, Jul 7 – Aug 7, Oct 8 – Nov 7 and Jan 6 – Feb 4Earth: supported

In season means the season of its own element; traditionally the Day Master has the season's support. Supported: the season of the element that feeds it. Expressive: the season of the element it produces. Busy: the season of the element it controls. Under pressure: the season of the element that controls it. Season is one factor; the whole chart decides overall strength.

Geng Metal and Yi Wood: the stem combination

Geng Metal pairs with Yi Wood in one of the five stem combinations (庚乙合). Traditionally the pair is drawn together, and under the right seasonal conditions the combination is said to transform toward Metal. In a chart, it can describe a strong pull between the areas of life the two stems represent. Whether it transforms is a technical question that depends on the month and the rest of the chart.

Questions

Is Geng Metal a strong Day Master?

Its nature is described as hard and vigorous, but that is temperament, not chart strength. Practitioners judge strength by the season, with autumn traditionally supportive, by roots in branches like Shen and You, and by how much Earth feeds it. A Geng in a summer chart with heavy Fire and little Earth can read as weak despite its tough image.

What element helps Geng Metal?

It depends on the chart, but the verse sketches the traditional options. Fire, especially Ding, refines Geng into something useful. Water lets its sharpness flow out cleanly. Moist Earth nourishes it. Which of these matters most is decided by what the chart lacks, so a practitioner looks at overall balance rather than applying one rule to everyone.

How do I know if I am a Geng Metal Day Master?

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born. Enter your birth date in the Day Master calculator, or your full birth details in the BaZi calculator for the exact chart. If the stem of your Day pillar is 庚 (Gēng), you are a Geng Metal Day Master.
