Your traditional Chinese age (虚岁, xūsuì) counts 1 at birth and adds a year at every Chinese New Year.

How the Chinese lunar calendar works

The Chinese calendar is lunisolar: months follow the moon, and years are kept in step with the sun. Each month begins on the day of the new moon, so it has 29 or 30 days. Twelve such months are about 11 days shorter than a solar year, so roughly every third year gets a leap month (闰月), seven times in every 19 years. The leap month repeats the number of the month before it and is placed where a month contains no major solar term.

Chinese New Year is the first day of the first month. It falls between January 21 and February 20, usually on the second new moon after the winter solstice.

Why converters sometimes disagree

The calendar is defined for China Standard Time (UTC+8). When a new moon happens close to midnight, calculating in another time zone can move the start of a month by a day. That is also why the Vietnamese calendar, which uses UTC+7, occasionally differs: in 1985 Vietnam celebrated Tết a month earlier than China's New Year. This converter always uses UTC+8, like official Chinese calendars.

Questions

How do I find my lunar birthday this year?

Enter your lunar birth month and day in the lunar birthday converter above. It lists the Gregorian date for each coming year. If you only know your Gregorian birth date, convert it to a lunar date first, then press "Find this lunar date in other years".

What is a leap month in the Chinese calendar?

An extra month added about seven times every 19 years to keep the lunar months in step with the seasons. It takes the number of the month before it, so a year can have a second fourth month, for example. If you were born in a leap month, most families celebrate in the regular month in years that have no matching leap month.

What is my Chinese age?

Traditional Chinese age (虚岁) counts 1 at birth and adds a year at every Chinese New Year, so it is usually one or two years more than your Western age. The Chinese age calculator above shows both and the date of your next increase.

Is the Chinese lunar calendar the same as the Islamic or Hebrew calendar?

No. The Islamic calendar is purely lunar and moves through the seasons. The Hebrew calendar is lunisolar like the Chinese one but uses different rules for leap months and the start of the year.
